In an interview after playing on Late Night with David Letterman (Carson Productions, 1982-93), backed up by a rock band, she told The Life newspaper: "We had a ball, we rocked it up, and that's what it's all about," she said. In 1978, reeling from a layoff from her job at General Electric and her mother's death, she decided to pursue a career playing polka music full time. They fell in love playing the accordion together. There she met her husband, Jan Krsek, also from Czechoslovakia. Her family faced food scarcity and trauma during WWII, spending four years in a refugee camp in Germany, where she performed for other displaced persons and American GIs, before emigrating to the United States in the 1950s. Born in Prague, Czechoslovakia as Vlasta Wanke, the biography on the back of her album reported that she was considered the "Shirley Temple of Czechoslovakia," who tap danced and played the accordion in over a dozen European movies. Krsek's love for playing polka music on the accordion made her an unlikely, but unforgettable, star. Krsek's unique, exuberantly decorated instrument matches her personality, adding drama and humor to the revelation that Ferris is singing on a parade float while cutting class, shocking his friends and and making Krsek and her accordion a memorable part of the film. In Krsek's Chicago Sun-Times obituary, Maureen O'Donnell called the scene "one of the most exuberant movie scenes ever filmed," and Krsek a "head-tossing, foot-stomping dynamo."
